The idea

How it lives

Two simple metal bars meet in an L and turn their life inward. The tall bar holds the kitchen, dining and living room under a 3:12 roof; the lower wing holds three bedrooms off one gallery. Between them is a 30 by 30 foot courtyard, its near half under a covered porch for dining and sitting.

  • The courtyard is the center

    The house wraps two sides of a 30 × 30 ft court; the open sides look out and drain away.

  • A tall gathering room

    Kitchen, dining and living share one bar with 15-foot eaves and a 12-foot multi-slide door to the court.

  • A quiet bedroom wing

    Three bedrooms off one gallery, the primary suite at its end with a dressing room and walk-in closet.

  • A study by the door

    A study, the laundry and a powder room sit by the front door.
